I like that first photo. To me it gives the impression of 'well, whilst walking, I turned a corner. And this was the view which presented itself before me'
Personally I prefer that kind of 'I suddenly saw ... snapshot' style, as opposed to the more rigid picture postcard style as I see in the second one - as good and well centred as it is, with the trees forming both a side foreground and a backdrop.
