anti-virus software

As regards anti-virus software, I've just read an interesting article
in the April 07 issue of "Computer Shopper". This was written by
Simon Edwards who has carried out extensive tests on various
programs you can buy or download for free.

Of the 2 free ones tested, AVG was found to be better that Avast,
and of the commercial ones, he thought the best buy was
Steganos Antivirus 2007 (which performed better than AVG).
I installed Avast on Mrs C's computer, but now I'm thinking about
using AVG/Steganos.

Here are the links to the AVG and Steganos sites ...

I'll see your 2 links and bid a 3'rd, two of which rate AVAST over AVG ;)

A comparative review here which rates AVAST's limited adware and spyware removal over AVG.

Quote "But Avast surpasses AVG by scanning both Outlook and standard Internet (POP3/SMTP) mail" from here

And a review of AVAST here

Bias me lud? NOT 'ARF ;) I rests me case yer honor, shall we adjourn to the hostelry across the road for port and viands?

Ultimately its your choice...Good Luck :)

Hi Edt: I was interested to read your references, which praised Avast. The article I read only gave it a 2 star rating for getting rid of over 200 current viruses thrown at it, whereas AVG was given a 4 star rating.
I find it's difficult to chose between them, given the conflicting reports.

Was Simon Edwards's review of the free versions?...the paid for versions of AVG and AVAST rate higher so I believe?

To allay your choice difficulty a tad I really don't think there's a lot in it when comparing free AV products.

I ran AVAST, Ad-Aware SE Personal from Lavasoft, Spybot: Search & Destroy and Zonealarm's fire wall (all free) as a security combo for several years with no problems.

NOD32 is now my 'paid for' anti-virus of choice on the new WinXP machine with the free AVAST still running on the old Win98se machine.

Good Luck.

Thanks, edt. The author compared the free "home" editions of AVG and Avast, and stated the obvious, that you get more if you pay for it. I don't think he tested the professional versions of these programs.

I did indeed compare the free products, although I would not expect to find a difference between their detection accuracy and that of the commercial products. This is because most freeware versions use the same detection engines but lack some of the nice extras such as enhanced interfaces, better scheduling options and so on. In Avast!'s case, the only difference in terms of detection between the Home (free) and Pro (not free) versions is that the Pro version has a script blocker. You can see a comparison on the official Alwail site.

PS. You can read the whole set of reviews, testing methods etc. on my site. The tests are certainly not biased, nor are they based on marketing claims made by anti-virus companies.
