Salts Mill in Saltaire, Yorkshire

I've found a couple of photos of Salts Mill,
that I took on our visit there, last November.
The mill and the surrounding town of Saltaire
was created by Titus Salt in the 1800s.
I took the first photo of the top floor in the
early afternoon, while we were waiting for a
free table in the restaurant. You will see the
glorious light, that floods in through all the
windows.
The second photo was taken at twilight, towards
the end of our visit.

Bill Bryson mentions Titus Salt and Saltaire in "Notes from a Small Island". Interesting to see a photo of Salts Mill ...

Titus Salt had the streets local to the model village named after his children.

If you visit www.multimap.com search for saltaire, zoom in and on the map you will see, up from Titus Street, the various names.

Cheers

Yes, we went house-hunting there with one of my daughters and her partner, on our last visit, but most of the houses were smaller than the back-to-back, they're currently living in, in Leeds. Excellent train service into Leeds City Centre though, for commuters.

I used to live near there and do you know he gave them a church, library, schools, good housing, but no pub?
Built close to the river and canal was an ideal spot away from the grime of Bradford by keeping his workers close by and sober he made more cloth. ah the good old days eh, 12 hours a day 6 days a week and Sunday off from the age of 6 or 7.

I didn't know about the lack of a pub in Saltaire (there are some now)... perhaps the workers resorted to making their own beer/wine instead?
